One Wednesday afternoon in June, Ajax shared photos on its media channels of the first training session of the new season. A smiling Francesco Farioli, with assistant coach Daniele Cavalletto at his side. This image is primarily meant to reignite the dampened enthusiasm among the supporters. With new faces, the recent frustration in Amsterdam should become a thing of the past, and the longing for rebuilding is palpable.
This brings to mind the arrival of a new coaching duo following the dismissal of Maurice Steijn at the end of October. Under the leadership of interim coach John van ‘t Schip, Ajax hoped to bring back success. The Amsterdammer brought along Michael Valkanis, his loyal right-hand man with whom he had enjoyed a successful working relationship in the past. The Australian closely witnessed how poorly Ajax was performing and believes there should be more respect for what the club has achieved over the past six months.
